Cowles Mountain

Today I decided to take the kids on a hike up Cowles mountain. It took us awhile to get out of the house, but I finally got everything we needed.
Joli was not sure what to expect. Her idea of a hike is somewhat like a nature walk, so when I told her we were going to the top of a mountain, she started freaking out that she needed to bring her snow boots!
Markus was happy just riding along.

We saw several lizards along the trail. They didn't seem to really be afraid of people.
Every time we'd come around a corner Joli would say "Wow, you can see the whole city!".
Joli was such a trooper! She only had a few falls, but nothing serious. She was pretty much excited by every new challenge.

Joli found a stick near the bottom of the trail and decided it was her "hiking stick".

Eventually Markus was swayed to sleep. I think he definitely had the better end of the deal.
Joli learned many lessons today! She learned a lot about nature.
She also learned about the value of setting a goal and achieving it!! Along the way we talked about milestones and how proud we should feel as we reach each one.
She was so proud to have made it to the top!

Markus wasn't all that impressed.

There were several bushes at the top that attracted a large number of butterflies! They were so pretty!

Before too long Markus realized the ride had stopped.

We relaxed at the top for awhile and had a snack.
Markus was all about rock climbing.

Joli also learned another valuable lesson about being courteous to others along the trail! She did such a great job! On the way down people kept telling us how inspiring it was that Joli could make it to the top and that I could carrying Markus. We're pretty amazing! Joli was so exited when we made it to the bottom. She started jumping up and down!
Such a fun and rewarding day!

So glad you put up photos - kudos to you all. Glad you didn't find any rattlesnakes. Pretty "Joshua butterfly" in your photo. :)
